MISSION STATEMENT

We aim to create a learning environment that provides students with the skills and experience that are required to operate within the UK space sector. This includes documentation, safety, design procedure and normal industry practice, using our launch campaigns as a platform to expose students to these kinds of practices.

We also inspire the future of STEM through our outreach programme, events in collaboration with STEM-focused societies and charities, and our launches themselves.

WHAT WE DO

Our team designs, builds, and launches high-powered rockets in Scotland. In addition, we have numerous projects involving in-house microelectronics, rocket engine design and manufacture, media and content creation, and so much more.

Consisting of over 120 members, our team have won awards, broken records, and inspired young people across the country.

PROJECTS

SALTIRE-2

A fully custom composite rocket, Saltire-2 was the successor to our first rocket, Saltire-1.

In August 2022, we launched Saltire-2 to 15,569ft with a top speed of Mach 1.2, breaking the Scottish student altitude record.

Our first competition entry, Eligius was a Junior Development Programme (JDP) rocket.

Eligius flew at the Mach-23 competition in July 2023 and won second place in Category 1.

HELIOS

Helios is the first liquid bi-propellant rocket engine designed by GU Rocketry. It will be entered into the Race to Space competition in summer 2024 where it will be hot-fired with a target thrust of 1kN.

GROUND SUPPORT SYSTEM

The GSS is a bespoke launch control system capable of filling and igniting hybrid and liquid rockets, it will also be capable of igniting solid rockets

Meet Oberon-0 and Oberon-1, the latest dynamic duo from our Aerostructures team! 🚀

On International Women’s Day 2025 (March 8th), we proudly launched Oberon-0 to an altitude of 605 metres (1980 feet) above ground level. The rocket maintained stable flight throughout, but unfortunately encountered an issue during recovery.

But we don’t give up that easily 💪 — just three weeks later, we were back with Oberon-1! This time, the rocket soared to 927 metres (3040 feet) above ground level, achieving both a stable flight and a successful recovery! ✅

The Oberon series has been a huge step forward in developing our capabilities, preparing us for even more ambitious missions in the future.

These launches challenged us, taught us, and, as always, brought a whole lot of fun along the way! ✨

Rocketry isn't just about the rockets...
GUR's rockets fly with an advanced suite of electronics, capable of a wide variety of missions, like gathering data about the rocket, the environment, and much more!
None of this would be possible without @jlcpcb, who manufacture the circuit boards for projects like our cutting edge ASTRA flight computer. With services such as PCB printing and in-house component assembly, they enable us to go further and further with each new project.

Last week, our propulsion team successfully hot-fired Helios at this year's Race2Space competition, marking GUR's first liquid bi-prop engine. 😎

Three burns were conducted at 5, 3, and 10 seconds at 600N, 750N, and 1300N respectively, with no issues firing 💥🚀

Rocket building has COMMENCED! 🚀

We've started work on an as-of-yet UNANNOUNCED(!) rocket 🛠

Body tubes and fins have been cut, and attached together with our very own state-of-the-art fin jig, so that each fin is perfectly aligned with the body 📐

Each fin edge is chamfered, and fillets are created and sanded down at the joints to create a smooth transition between the tube and the edge of the fins ✏

⚠️ANNOUNCING PRIZE WINNERS📣

Five first-year members from our Junior Development Programme came in third place in the 2023/24 Airbus Space Competition! 🌠💫

The competition saw teams across the country design a concept for a lunar startup. The team created a system for creating landing pads and roads on the Moon's surface, including designing a lunar rover with its own base station 🌕🛰

The prize money the team won is being used to COMPLETELY FUND this year's JDP, including the materials and parts to build all of the members' personal rockets! 🚀

We'd like to thank Aidan, Alyssa, Hannah, Lewis, and Matthew for their incredibly generous donation and congratulate them on their massive win!

We visited St Mungo's High School in Falkirk to deliver an exciting lesson on how to build rockets! 🧑‍🚀🚀

After teaching the basics of aerodynamics, each pupil designed and built their very own bottle rocket to be launched at the makeshift launch site 🏫
